Friend of the Community Passes Away

Glenmary Father James Patrick Kelly Dies

Father James Patrick Kelly, 95, a native of Sidney, Ohio, and a Glenmary Home Missioner for 62 years, died peacefully March 22 at Mercy Franciscan Terrace, a health care facility in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Father Kelly was the spiritual director for eleven years of the superior/moderator, one of the founders of the Community-in-Formation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in Cincinnati, whose priestly ministry is at Old St. Mary’s Church at Over-the-Rhine of Cincinnati.

Being his spiritual director, Father Kelly approved, motivated, and encouraged the formation of the Community-in-Formation at Old St. Mary’s Church in 2008.  As a sign of his spiritual support, he donated to the newly formed Community hundreds of his books.

He died two days after the last visit of his spiritual directee, and he blessed Father Juarez so that he sees to it that Cincinnati Oratory be born, which was Fr. Kelly’s last wish and mission.  In spite of his failing health, he wanted to attend the conferral of habit of his spiritual directee, but died in afternoon of the day before the Conferral of Habit which took place last week.  Requiescat in Pace!
