Office of Tenebrae

Please join Old St. Mary’s Parish and the Community-in-Formation for the Ancient Office of Tenebrae on Good Friday. Tenebrae will be taken entirely from the Libera Usualis, and chanted according to the Rites of the Church. Tenebrae for Good Friday Night is the Offices of Matins and Lauds for Holy Saturday morning. It includes the 9 Psalms and 9 Lessons of Matins, along with the 5 Psalms of Lauds. It concludes with the chanting of the entire Christus Factus Est (Christ was made obedient, taken from the Epistle to the Philippians Chapter 2). Tenebrae will last about an hour and a half. Please join us as we commemorate the Passion of Our Lord. Everyone is welcome!

Order of Acolyte

On Saturday, March 24th, Br. Adrian was installed as an Acolyte of the Church by His Excellency the Most Rev. Joseph Binzer, Auxiliary Bishop of Cincinnati.  The Order of Acolyte is an ancient Order, going back to the earliest days of the Church.  There are several times in the Martyrology (Liturgical Book of Martyrs) that records the martyrdom of acolytes.  The Acolyte is considered a Minister of the Altar, and his primary duties include assisting the Deacon at the Altar, and purifying the Sacred Vessels in the absence of a Deacon.  During the Rite, the Bishop handed Br. Adrian a paten and chalice with this exhortation:  Take this vessel of bread for the celebration of the Eucharist. Make your lives worthy of your service at the table of the Lord and of his Church.  We congratulate Br. Adrian in taking this important step on his path to the priesthood!

Habits Conferred

His Grace, Most Rev. Dennis M. Schnurr, Archbishop of Cincinnati, conferred the Community’s new habits at a ceremony earlier this afternoon at Old St. Mary’s Parish in Cincinnati. It consisted of prayers, litanies, chants, and the actual blessing and conferral of the habit. The ritual concluded with the consecration of Chalices and Patens for several of the transitional deacons, from both the Archdiocese and the Community, scheduled for Priestly Ordination on May 19th. A light reception followed the Ceremony. We thank His Grace for making the time to come to Old St. Mary’s for this special occasion. We are also grateful to all of the priests and seminarians who were able to join us on this special day, including Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West (Cincinnati, Ohio) Rector, Very Rev. Benedict O’Cinnsealaigh. Finally, we are very grateful for all of the prayers and support that everyone has shown to us, and we thank all who were able to come out this afternoon. Without the prayers and support of everyone, this would not have been possible. Here are a few pictures from this afternoon, more pictures to come in the following days.

Conferral of the Habit

On March 23rd, 2012, the Archbishop of Cincinnati, Most Rev. Dennis Schnurr, will be at Old St. Mary’s Parish at 4:30 in the afternoon to confer the Community’s new habit on the members.  Please join us if you are able.  More pictures and information will follow after the Ceremony.
